The Kingdom of Tonga...

The Kingdom of Tonga is made up of over 170 tropical islands stretching over 800kms north - south down the eastern side of the International date line. The population of about 100,000 is spread through the three main island groups – Tongatapu, Ha’apai and Vava’u.

Tongatapu, lying at the southern end of the chain, is the largest island with the country’s capital, Nuku'alofa, and is home to over two thirds of the total population. The Ha'apai group, sprinkled across the middle of the kingdom’s sparkling ocean, is the archetypal South Pacific paradise with dazzling white sand beaches, waving palm trees and turquoise lagoons. The islands of the Vava’u group at the northern end of the chain are both tropical sand islands as well as more rugged with tropical forests, sea-level caves and limestone cliffs plunging into the water. The seas around Tonga abound with life and are home to the vibrant world of the coral reef. Plunge below the surface and you enter a spectacular underwater world that will dazzle with its variety and colour.

Tonga is the South Pacific’s only constitutional monarchy. King George Tupou V was officially crowned in 2008 and presides over the Government as the supreme authority. The main sources of income are tourism, agriculture and fishing, although many Tongans living overseas send their relatives money and goods. All over Tonga daily life still follows a traditional village pattern. As the majority of Tongans are devout Christians, Sunday is considered to be sacred so nobody works and all the churches are crowded. As a visitor you are always welcome to attend their services or you can relax on the beach and indulge in a bit of sun worship.

In the Ha’apai group, where we are based, the rhythm of life is slow and steady. Of the 62 islands, 45 are uninhabited and almost all are low coral islands with vibrant reefs and kilometres of deserted white beaches fringed with coconut palms. The horizon to the west is dominated by the dormant volcanic cone of Kao side by side with Tofua, an active volcano that is famous for its role in Mutiny on the Bounty!

Tonga is also known as “The Friendly Islands” and you’ll generally find Tongans are friendly and helpful, with a great sense of humour! English is widely spoken, so if you can’t speak Tongan don’t worry, you won’t be lost for words!

Climate
Tonga is basically subtropical with a cooler, drier season between May and November when the temperature ranges from 23°C to 27°C (74 °F - 80 °F). The region's wet season lasts from November to April with December and January normally the wettest months. Temperatures rise up to 32°C and the average daily humidity is 80%.

Although Tonga lies within the South Pacific cyclone belt they only occur, on average, every 10 to 15 years. The season for tropical storms and cyclones is between November and March.

The Sandy Beach Resort

This small bungalow resort is situated on Foa Island in the Ha'apai group of islands. Here, you will find the most wonderful white sandy beaches in Tonga. This is the ideal place for tourists who seek a calm paradise with sophistication and want to enjoy unspoilt nature. Jürgen offers trips in canoes or on horseback, and is doing bushwalks with the guests. On Sundays, guests are welcome to join him on his way to church.

From time to time a floor show with traditional dances is organised. Wonderful sunsets with a view on the Kao volcano, soft classical music and an excellent dinner bring the day to a peaceful end. 12 bungalows called "Fale" are situated directly on the white sandy beach. Even at low tide, bathing is possible. The small coral reefs in the lagoon invite one to snorkel and are ideal for beginners. All rooms are comfortably and stylishly furnished. The offer includes double-bed rooms or rooms with two separate beds. The bungalows are designed so that air conditioning systems are superfluous. Each room has a terrace facing the sea, WC and shower with hot and cold water, ceiling fan, refrigerator and tea and coffee making facilities are standard. The rooms are serviced daily, and towels are also changed every day.

The airport of Ha'apai is situated on the Lifuka island which is linked to the Foa island by a dyke. The distance from the airport to Sandy Beach Resort is about 15 minutes by car. In most cases, Jürgen travels to the airport to collect his guests.

Travel information...

Airlines that fly to Tonga –
Air New Zealand
Pacific Blue
Air Pacific

There are daily international flights into Tongatapu, except on a Sunday. They tend to arrive in the morning, so a connecting flight up to Ha’apai is generally possible on the same day. If you are unable to connect, then there are plenty of places to stay in Nuku’alofa. Rising Sun Travel in Nuku’alofa will help you with bookings.

The domestic flight to Ha’apai is very scenic, flying over extensive blue ocean dotted with coral islands and their reefs!

The only operator is Chathams Pacific who run a daily flight to Ha’apai, except on Sundays. Flight time from Nuku’alofa varies between 35 and 45 mins, depending on the type of plane. We suggest you book in advance and this can be done via their website www.chathamspacific.com

Ferry
There is an inter-island ferry, but it’s fairly unreliable and not the most comfortable of passages!
Activities...
There are plenty of activities to keep you amused whilst you’re not out on the whaleboat or taking a dive to check out the beautiful reefs.

Why not grab a Kayak and take a trip around some of the other islands. There are two other islands close by and can easily be reached by Kayak. The island of Nukunamo is a small-uninhabited island with some beautiful beaches and great snorkelling. The island of Ha’ano can also be reached by Kayak; here you will find two villages that still live in a traditional Tongan way.

The snorkelling from the shore is some of the best in Ha’apai, just come and hire some snorkel gear for the day if you don’t have your own and we can tell you where the best spots are. Snorkel gear hire $10TOP a day.

Sandy beach resort and Matafonua Lodge both have bikes available to guests, so spend a day cycling through the traditional Tongan villages and chat to the locals. The routes are all pretty flat so you don’t need to worry about too many hills! You could even bike all the way to Pangai, the biggest town here on the island. In Pangai you will find a few small shops and a small market. The market is of most interest on Saturday mornings when they have some live Tongan music. Marniers café is also here so why not stop for a cold drink or lunch.

Horse riding is also available, take a trek through the bush or along the white sandy beaches. This can be arranged through Jurgen, the owner of Sandy beach resort.

There are some lovely bush walks that take you around to the other side to the island where the landscape is much more rugged. Beyond the breakers lies the Tongan trench. The Tongan trench is 10882m (35702 ft) deep at its deepest point. It is also known as the Horizon Deep.

In Tonga Sundays are a day for rest and church, visitors are more than welcome to attend the service. Some of the singing is magnificent!!!!
