Happy Ha’apai Divers offers a variety of tailor-made kayaking trips around Tonga’s amazingly beautiful Northern Ha’apai island group. The fringing reef on the eastern side of the islands protects our waters from the swell of the open ocean and means that kayaking can be carried out in relatively sheltered conditions.

The Ha’apai islands are conveniently spaced to accommodate all paddling abilities. If you’re a beginner don’t worry as there are some lovely, short, easy paddles, but also some longer more challenging trips across open stretches of blue water.

Most of the near-by islands are easily reached in a day’s kayaking and offer great opportunities to explore local villages, historic sites and stunning coastlines only accessible from the water.

A high percentage of the reefs are pristine and bursting with marine life.

All our kayaks are available for hire on a Self Guided basis – depending on your ability and experience. They kayaks are designed for coastal paddling and have pedal operated rudders, skirts compartments for your gear. Hire includes full safety gear - flares and a hand-held VHF radio – and for the more adventurous who would like a night on a deserted island, we have some camping gear available.

Live Aboard options are available for sea kayakers to stay on our sailing vessel Cat Knapp outside the whale watching season. Trips can be tailor-made to suit your requirements, but we’d recommend a minimum of three days. A typical itinerary includes kayaking during the day from one island to another with a stop for lunch and a reef snorkel en route. You might choose to spend a night ashore in a village enjoying a traditional Tongan feast and afterwards stay in thatched fales; or camp on a deserted island – under a canopy of a million stars and be lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of waves. Whatever your taste, there’s something to suit everyone’s sense of adventure.
